Jaden has swam in the pool with floaties for four summers. Four long summers of waiting for her to learn to swim. It wasn't until last year that she felt comfortable enough to jump into the water and into our arms. That happened in Utah.
This past winter I put her into swim lessons in an attempt to have her develop a survival stroke before this summer. This will sound like a bunch of Mom pride but I tell you the truth when I type. The instructor found her so fun and cute that she rarely put her down; she just ooed and cooed over her. So much for learning a survival stroke. :) I think lessons in group settings are good but, generally speaking, kids are going to swim when they're ready. And Ju decided last Friday that she was ready.
It was the day of the party, fifty people here to swim and socialize, when Jade declared firmly, "I don't want floaties anymore." And off came the jacket. I tried to reason with her, "Honey, let's wait until tomorrow when there aren't 35 kids in the pool to cut it loose." But she wouldn't be swayed; it was time.
That was five days ago and now she can swim from the steps all the way across the pool to touch the other side without touching the bottom. AND, she can dive down and pick up dive toys off of the bottom of the pool. Granted it's the 3 foot end of the pool, but that's still success.
She doesn't look like Michael Phelps when she swims, no, she looks more like a labradore retriever, but she's stroking and it's a SURVIVAL STROKE!
Good Job, Peanut!
Love, Mommy
