We're in the midst of an auction. I can't explain how big of a job that has been for Scott. It's been huge. After going through most of our out buildings, Scott and the auctioneer came up with the game plan and put the signs out. Advertising began three weeks ago and we've been to Kinkos a total of three times having more sale bills printed. So far, so good (except for a really tired husband.)
Soon after I met Scott, nearly twelve years ago, I came to realize that this weekend would someday happen. It didn't take this soon to be daughter-in-law long to realize that my future Daddy-in-law was quite the pack rat! I've never seen so much stuff in all my life. Some of the "stuff" is plain junk and some of it is considered quite valuable by some (not me). Perhaps some of you reading this have parents or grandparents who would also fall into the catagory of pack rat. Perhaps you are also dreading the day, or weekend, or months (that's what it has been for us) that it will take to clean out your relatives homes or barns. May I give you adivce? Keep your eyes on the rewards at the end. For example, we can't hardly believe that after six-and-a-half years we will actually be able to use our outbuildings for cars, a workshop or maybe even a place to hang our skimmer for the pool.
If there was any part of me that was a pack rat prior to moving here, it's gone. I'm cured. If my kids haven't played with a toy in a week then it's outta' here. Okay, okay so I'm exaggerating, but not by much. Clutter clutters your life. My goal since we moved here has been to simplify my life. I'm still working on it......I have to get to those bathroom drawers and the art cabinet in the kitchen! It's an on going process but I'm grateful to be on the right road. Having this auction will declutter our out buildings and our lives all at one time. The crew will be here soon......
Maybe I'll journal later about the feelings that come from having your property over taken by complete strangers. It's been a little rough. Remember, I'm just a city girl. Scott's Dad has been frequenting auctions one to four times a week since 1957 (hence all of the stuff/junk). Therefore, Scott grew up in this environment. As a matter of fact, he jokes that he wasn't adopted he was surely bought at auction. But me? No, this isn't my thing.
I occupied myself by taking care of Dad (father-in-law.) He lives in a nursing home but wanted to come to the auction. I picked him up early and he watched almost all of the first day. He had a good time watching the art of the deal. I've come to understand that the art of the deal is what all of his stuff was always about. It's still junk in my book though.
Well, we're off to do it again. Day #2 of the auction will be over this evening and then we will make everything stop so that we can rest in the knowledge that our daughter will be here soon. Tomorrow we'll learn her name, where she lives and how old she is. Let's get this auction under way......
...........Let the bidding begin!

I expect a call really soon after you get your referral call!! At least this one should not be at 2am ;). I'll be on pins and needles all day waiting for our the next day!
The day we've been waiting for is finally here friend! We are going to meet our daughters!!
Cindy
p.s. I hope you did whatever Wendy Wu asked you to, to insure we will be at the White Swan at the same time:)

Wow, what a major undertaking. When you mentioned the auction the other day on the phone I was picturing where you would take a car load over to your church to donate or something. Holy cow, you are talking lifestyle change..for the better! How sweet that your father-in-law wanted to come. Was it really hard for him? I can't understand why anyone would want that much stuff, but what do I know? I can be ruthless with the Goodwill bin at our house. Just dropped off another 2 bags this week. Think of all the good this will do clearing out that space and I'm sure you'll have a little profit for the impending addition to your family!
