Valerie's Brownie troop was scheduled for camping in October. CANCELLED due to frost. They were scheduled to go camping last night. CANCELLED due to rain. I spoke with my friend Carlyn about this. She has two boys who are in Cub Scouts. She assures me that the Cub Scouts would have camped no matter the weather. I suppose in many ways.......we are the weaker sex. And apparently, we teach this to our girls early! We wouldn't want them to learn to camp with anything other than perfect conditions now would we? (Side note: If I sound anything other than supportive of the plan to cancel the camping trip then I'm misrepresenting myself here. After all, I was in Brownies and was taught at an early age as well! :-)
When the leaders cancelled the camping trip on Wednesday (when the forcast says rain - don't wait! Be quick and decisive in your decisions, girls! Just CANCEL!) Scott and I came up with an idea. We decided to camp at home ~ in the living room. Well, come on. Rain was in the forcast, you know! We set about keeping secrets and making plans. Here are some pictures of our evening.
We picked the kids up from school and headed straight to the swimming pool! We had a great time and the kids were able to show off all that they have learned in swimming lessons.
Next, we set up camp in the living room, including a "bon fire" in the fireplace. Hot dogs were enjoyed by all. We even used Happy Birthday napkins in honor of Grandma Dawn's birthday. We picked up the phone and sang Happy Birthday to her too (on the answering machine.) HmmmmMmmmm.....only to realize a short time later that her birthday is JULY 12th, NOT May 12th!!! We're sorry Grandma. Scott had the idea to call her back and sing, "Unhappy birthday to you...unhappy birthday to you....." The kids thought that was a hoot!
After enjoying our s'mores made perfectly in our fire, we enjoyed games and a movie. This is Kevin in his tent watching the movie. This was about the time that Scott and I started looking at each other with the, "Are we really going to sleep on the floor?" look.
Valerie can typically only take so much. She enjoys her sleep and started begging for sleep at her normal bedtime. Kevin wasn't far behind her. It took awhile for them to settle in but we had lights off and a roaring fire at 10pm.
Scott was on the floor between them and, shamefully, I was on the couch.
We had a great time and look forward to our next "special night". Thanks Valerie & Kevin for such a good time. Your Daddy & I are blessed.
The only thing missing was Jaden!
By the way, I woke up stiff and uncomfortable at 4:30am. I came into the computer and Scott was in bed! Cheater!!
