Valerie made her decision and we will not be putting the video on the blog. It is the sweetest and funniest video. On one level, I wish that I could share it. However, her dignity is much more important. I'll share the moment in pictures instead. She's okay with this.
This is Valerie picking Jenny up for their special outing. Michelle, Jenny's Mom, and I took them to have their ears pierced. A very big event in the life of a 1st grader!
Valerie has never wanted her ears pierced. She has looked up to Mrs. Fulp for a long time. You see, Mrs. Fulp doesn't have pierced ears and Valerie thought that was great. She has never wanted her ears peirced because she believed it would hurt too bad.
It wasn't until Jenny decided to take the jump that Valerie considered it. She and Jenny talked at school and Valerie agreed to go with her to hold her hand (as long as it was okay with Mom and Dad, of course.)
That quickly lead to her deciding that if Jenny was doing it, then she could to. She asked her Dad and I what we thought, and after talking about it, we agreed.
The Mom's talked and called around looking for just the right place and off we went on a "Girls only adventure." We cried, laughed and felt pride as we watched the girls experience this together. (Oh, you should see the video. It's priceless!)
We were very proud of Valerie. After 7 1/2 years of standing her ground about ear piercing, she bravely agreed to go first. Somebody had to do it and Jenny agreed that Valerie could. I wonder if she now wishes she had gone first.
Valerie is just like me in that she is extremely emotional. Lots and lots of tears! As her Mom, I could tell that they weren't tears of pain, but tears of joy and excitement. However, Jenny didn't interpret them that way. It scared her. In addition, Valerie kept saying through her tears, "It shocked me!" Jenny thought that she meant a REAL shock. She was not going to have any part of that! We finally, with Valerie's help, convinced her that Valerie meant, "surprised", not shocked.
Here they are! All done. It took a lot of time and lots of coaxing after Jenny saw all of Valerie's tears but they are done and they are happy!
We are proud of them!
After finishing with the ear piercing we all went to TGIFridays for dinner. Here the girls are watching (sort of) the video that we took. This is the part in the video where one of them is actually having an ear pierced. They just couldn't watch it again! This cracked us up!!!
Too fun!
Lastly, I want to explain how this picture came about. Apparenlty, Valerie was resistent about having her ears pierced when Jenny talked to her about it. So, like any good friend would, Jenny drew Valerie a picture of them having their ears pierced to show her what it would be like.
When Valerie came home from school that day she said, "Mom, it will be okay. Jenny drew me a picture and I'm prepared now." Aren't girlfriends the best?!!
